Year 1 - Miss Mortimer
Welcome to Year 1!

Important reminders
Reading
Monster Phonics Reading books and diaries should be brought into school every day.
Reading books will only be changed when your child reads their book 3x at home. Please remember to sign the reading diary each time your child reads.
Please encourage your child to read books for pleasure! Bedtime stories are best and can develop your child's vocabulary and language as well as help to develop their love for reading!
If you would like to find out more about monster phonics click here.
Spellings will be tested on a Friday and new spellings given out weekly.
Here are some useful websites to prepare your child for the phonics screening check in June:
PE
PE is every Thursday Afternoon. Please make sure your child comes to school in full PE kit.
Please remember to tie long hair up.
Black plimsolls to be kept in school with names in for indoor PE sessions.
Autumn 2
English

This half term Y1 read the stories 'Whatever Next' and 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes'.
The children retold the story of 'Whatever Next' with a beginning, middle and end section and produced some fantastic work!

The children wrote instructions on how to make pancakes to help Mr Wolf from our story 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes'. They loved reading the story and they role played parts of the story. They then enjoyed making pancakes and eating them! Well done Y1.

Snow tubing

Y1 had an unforgettable day on their snow tubing trip! It was wonderful seeing lots of brave faces and the children had lots of fun zooming down the slopes! Miss Mortimer was so proud of how the children represented our school with their enthusiasm and super behaviour. They enjoyed a hot chocolate after a fun session of snow tubing!
Computing- Digital Art
Y1 learnt about how to make digital art using their mouse skills, moving the cursor and left clicking with their finger, it was tricky at first, but the children persevered and made fantastic 'digital art'. They changed the colour of each individual pixel to create an image, learned how to add more detail and how to edit their digital art. Well done Y1.

Autumn 1
Art
Y1 learned about the Artist Pablo Picasso and created art in cubism style. We created a piece of art work based on our science topic 'animals'. We thought about shape, colour and shading when we designed our final piece and we created some fantastic art work. We finished off by outlining in black pen to make it stand out.

Walk to Backhouse Park
We visited Backhouse Park to look for signs of Autumn. We found lots of leaves on the ground and we even found some conkers! The children enjoyed playing in the leaves and exploring the park.

St Aidan's Church
Y1 had a lovely visit to St Aidan's Church as part of their RE learning. The children learned about baptisms and Father David showed us what happens when someone is baptised. The children were assigned roles to learn who would be at the baptism such as godparents and parents. We were told the story of Jesus being baptised which helped the children understand why Christians want to be baptised.
