Reception - Miss Holyoak
Welcome to the Reception page. Here parents/carers can find lots of important information regarding your child's education here at Grangetown Primary School. I am so excited to get started with our lovely class of 30 children. In the Reception classroom there will be two main members of staff. Miss Holyoak is the class teacher and Miss Pickering is the teaching assistant. We will also have extra support from Miss Hope and Miss Haley, to support with reading and interventions, where needed.
Dates for your Diary
Tuesday 6th September- Children return to school (please see letter for Reception's first week back).
What do the children need?
- Water bottle
- Reading book and Blue Reading Record Book
- A warm coat
- PE Kit - to be kept in school and taken home to be washed half termly.
- PE is on Tuesdays
- Blue books will be checked daily. We ask that children are reading 3 times a week at home, as a minimum. Please write a comment and sign the blue books when the children have read.
- Please return Contact and Medical Forms as soon as possible.
We are also looking for parent/carer volunteers who would like to come into school weekly, to read with the children. Please contact the office or speak to Miss Holyoak if you are interested. If selected, one of the children you will read with will be your own child. Training will be provided. Please note that, before starting, a full (enhanced) DBS check is needed for all adults accepted as volunteers in school.
Our topic in the first half of Autumn Term will be 'Me, Myself and I'.
Our trip to Backhouse Park
Reception had an excellent time on our trip to Backhouse Park to look for signs of Autumn. We also had a fun time playing on the park with our friends. We walked so sensibly to get to the park. Well done Reception. Miss Holyoak and Miss Pickering are very proud!
Reception have had a fantastic half term. We loved our special trip to Fuzzy Ed's in December and have really enjoyed the festivities. We have learned all about Stickman in our core story and also read One Snowy Night. We have enjoyed Halloween and Christmas celebrations, which has given us lots of writing and maths opportunities. We have also made some beautiful cards, calendars and baubles. We have loved playing in the snow in December and learning about the seasons. We have also been very excited by our stick insects hatching! What an amazing half term.
Please see the Stickman story read aloud by Julia Donaldson.
This half term Reception have been learning about Superheroes. We have focussed on the book Supertato Veggies assemble. We have looked at the reasons why the veggies are heroes and what makes someone a 'hero'. We have wrote some describing words for the book characters Evil Pea and Supertato. Evil Pea has played lots of tricks on us! We are also looking at famous superheroes such as 'Spiderman' and 'Batman'. We are also going to look at everyday superheroes and people who help us, such as police, nurses and firefighters.
I have been very impressed with the children's progress in maths at the moment. Look at our amazing 'Number Staircases' we made independently after using our Mastering Number scheme. We have very good understanding of number and adding one more each time.
Reception have been working very hard in phonics lessons. We have learned so many sounds and the children are applying this in their writing. We have also been working so hard to remember our High Frequency Words, which appear very often in our Monster Phonics reading books.
Here is a link to the High Frequency words, if you would like to practice online-
Summer 1 was all about planting! We loved reading 'It starts with a seed' and planting our own sunflowers. We made loads of crafts and enjoyed role playing in the garden centre.
We also took a trip to The Winter Gardens and Mowbray park! We also enjoyed learning about the frog life cycle and had our own frog spawn.
