Nursery & Reception places still available!
All new starters to our
Reception class will receive a
free royal blue sweatshirt,
complete with our new badge! We still have places for nursery and
reception, but they’re going fast. To secure your place, please
contact Mrs Minto at the school office (call in or ring 5537647).
Prospective parents are welcome to come and visit us. All parents
and new children will get the chance to visit school in June, to
meet our Early Years staff. Our Nursery and Reception offers your
child a safe and happy start to school – our talented and hard
working staff will ensure that your child settles in quickly and
makes great progress in their learning. We were recently inspected
by Ofsted, and they were full of praise for Early Years at
Grangetown:
“Children can work
independently, are happy and increasingly confident in all areas of
the provision and their behaviour is good”.
Ofsted, March 2011. |

Our Amazing Easter Concert!
The hall was packed for our Easter Concert earlier this week. The
huge audience of parents, carers and children were amazed at the
talent on display, and everyone had a thoroughly entertaining time.
Reception, year 1 and year 2 sang their selection of Easter songs
beautifully. We were all impressed with the Indian (year 3), Spanish
(year 4) and Greek (year 5) dancing – well done to Danielle, our
dance teacher. Our violinists and chalumeau players were superb, and
of course our choir was (as ever!) simply incredible. We’d all like
to thank Mr Preston (chalumeau), Miss Hanson (violin) and of course
Mrs Davies who leads our choir. Well done everyone! |

We meet a Modern-Day Robinson Crusoe
On Tuesday 8th March 2011 year 6 had a visitor - Chris
Connaughton, author and actor. He acted out a modern day version of
Robinson Crusoe - stuck on an island for twenty-seven years. After
the play, we wrote a journal entry as if we were Robinson, a
description of a setting, and we wrote a letter home to be sent in a
bottle! Our favourite part, however, was when we drew a map of what
might have been on the Island. By Tamara Rea and Neve Buford year 6. |

Bailey the Beagle!
On Monday 4th April Year 1 ended their ‘Animals’ topic by inviting
Louise from the Dogs Trust to talk about how to look after pets. The
children met Bailey the 5 year old Beagle dog, which they all got to
stroke and groom. The children talked about the things a dog needs
from its owners to be safe and healthy. All of the children have
thoroughly enjoyed the animals topic and are looking forward to
starting their new topic after the Easter break. Miss Hough. |

KS1 Craft Eggstravaganza!
Our KS1 children and parents took part in a craft afternoon to help
celebrate Easter. Parents and carers were invited into school to
work alongside their child. We had a selection of Easter craft
activities including making Easter cards, chick door hangers, Easter
baskets and chocolate nests and much, much more! A lot of parents
and carers took part and along with the children thoroughly enjoyed
the afternoon. Due to the success of the event we would like to
organise more family activities like this one. Thank you once again
for your continued support, a great afternoon had by all! Happy
Easter, KS1 Team. |

Easter Fayre Success
The Foundation Stage Team would like
to thank everyone who attended the Easter Fayre last week. The
event was a huge success and all parents and children had a great
time! It was very well attended by children and parents from
Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. Everyone had fun pinning the
tail on the bunny and hooking ducks. There was also delicious
chocolate crispy cakes that the children had made and a chance to
win lots of prizes. We are very pleased to announce that we raised
£200 for the Foundation Stage unit and this will aid us in
developing our outdoor environment. |

A Big Thank You!
We would like to say Thank You to all who donated prizes for the
Easter Raffle, which was very well organised by our Parents Group.
The many prizes included chocolate Easter eggs donated by
Sainsbury’s, swimming vouchers for Raich Carter Centre, a meal at
The Sandcastle and many more. Local historian, Matty Morrison
donated two of his latest books about the history and characters of
the local area, which we found very interesting. Thank you all once
again for your continued support! Mrs Cole |

Just Dance!
Grangetown Primary School has benefited from a dance family learning
course over the past term. Sarah from Sunderland University had our
parents, children and even staff strutting their stuff every Friday
after school! They mastered a routine to Singing in the Rain
complete with umbrellas as props. Well done in completing the
course, Britain’s Got Talent watch this space! Miss Booth |

Year 4 say ‘Hola’
to Vicente!
On Tuesday 5th
April Year 4 had a visit from Vicente, a student originally from
Valencia, Spain. During this session we told Vicente all we know
about Spain, and he was very impressed with our extensive knowledge
and facts! He told us about his life in Valencia, played some games
with us and taught us some Spanish. We can now ask: ‘Hello, how are
you?’ ‘What is your name?’ and are able to respond to these as well
as being able to count from 1 – 10. We all thoroughly enjoyed the
afternoon and it really helped to bring our topic of Spain to life.

all helped to correctly answer 428,598,214 questions correctly. By

New badge to launch in September!
You will receive an order form after Easter, setting out what is
available from our new uniform suppliers (ICE Sportswear, Ryhope
Rd). As you know, we now have a new badge. You are also welcome (if
you wish) to buy uniform from any shop or supermarket, and we can
arrange to have the badge embroidered by ICE. Some children are
already wearing uniform with the new badge, - it looks fantastic!
Though the official ‘launch’ will be September, you’re welcome to
start wearing uniform with the new badge as from now. We’ll be
making further announcements about PE shirts soon. |

Keeping your child safe!
We are still concerned about cars parking outside of school at the
start and end of the day. Please use the spaces at the bottom of
Spelterworks Road for parking – it takes less than a minute to then
walk to the school gates. Please note that no parking, picking up or
dropping off is permitted on the road immediately outside of school.
Several parents have pointed out that the situation had become
dangerous and chaotic. We are making these requests to ensure that
the children remain safe. Thankyou. |
