End of year
message for Parents/Carers
All staff at Grangetown would like to thank parents and carers for
your support and involvement over the past year. We really value the
way you have helped your children, encouraged them, got them to
school on time, and taken an interest in their learning. Mr
McAnaney writes: I have hugely enjoyed my first two terms at
Grangetown. The children have been welcoming and friendly, and I can
see how much they want to do their very best with all aspects of
their learning. The staff are truly second to none – they’re a great
team, so hard working and upbeat, and so supportive. It has been a
real pleasure working with parents and carers too. I have no doubt
that, as we move into a new school year, we are heading for
continued success. Thanks again for your support, and have a great
holiday." |

Farewell &
Good Luck to Year 6
Year 6 are all set to begin the next stage of their ‘learning
journey’, with most of the children transferring to Southmoor.
They’ve all given 100% in year 6, making their teachers proud with
their mature attitude. We’d like to wish them Good Luck for the
future. |

Blue is the
colour!
As you know, in our recent parents’ vote, royal blue won out over
red and now becomes our official school colour. Of 75 votes
received, 43 were for blue and 32 for red. Next year will be a
transition year, and the current grey tops will still be an
acceptable part of our uniform – we do not want you to have to throw
out anything. Every parent/carer was recently offered a free royal
blue sweatshirt, and we have now met that order via Asda. Other
orders made through Asda can now be collected from school. For a
while, the blue tops will be unbadged, but next year we will look
into getting all uniform embroidered. The current school badge is OK
for a good while yet, but next year we will run a design competition
so that our children can help us come up with a new, vibrant and
forward-thinking school badge. All in all, we hope we are giving
parents an affordable and cost-effective way of kitting out your
children – in the current recession it is surely important that
schools are as flexible as possible. What does ‘blue’ mean:
“Blue is calming. It can be strong and steadfast or light and
friendly. A natural colour, from the blue of the sky. A pure blue is
the colour of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality. Aqua is the
colour of high ideals. Electric or brilliant blues become dynamic
and dramatic, an engaging colour that expresses exhilaration”.
Well, according to Google! ;) |

Grease!
Grease was a real triumph!
The hall was sold out, and the children gave a thrilling
performance, bringing all of the well known characters to life. Full
marks to all members of the cast, and of course to our drama teacher
Mrs Davies – simply the best! Thanks also to all of our staff for
the way they rallied round, supporting the production in a number of
very important ways. For one very special evening, Grangetown
stepped back to 1959, becoming Rydell High and reliving the ups and
downs of Danny, Sandy and co. |

Purple Power
Last Saturday, the Drama group and some of the staff went down to
Manchester to support Mrs Davies our Drama teacher. She is part of a
singing group ‘Purple’ and they had auditions for the X Factor! It
was so exciting! We were all dressed in purple and carried a
fabulous Grangetown Banner. After an early 8 o’clock start and a
3-hour journey, we arrived at the hotel to pick up Mrs Davies, Jen
and Emily. On the way to the G-Mex however, the bus broke down! But
we didn’t let that stop us – we just grabbed our bags and started to
walk. When we arrived, it was a fantastic atmosphere with lots of
contestants waiting to audition. The children were very patient as
we waited in line. We were filmed many times – waiting in line,
walking along corridors, chanting PURPLE, while the group were on
stage and afterwards in the pod. Purple were brilliant in their
audition. We got to stand in the wings while Louis Walsh, Nicole
Scherzinger and Simon Cowell gave their opinions. The highlight of
the day was when we all met Dermot O’Leary who was really funny and
gave us all ‘five’ when the group were finished singing. We had a
fabulous day. Well done Purple! Mrs Millican |

More X-Factor
Memories
Jordan writes: On Saturday 10th of July we went to
Manchester for X-Factor, to support Mrs Davies. She was singing
Evacuate the Dance Floor with Jen and Emily. They were great!!! The
bus ride was 3 hours but it passed quickly because it was so much
fun - everyone enjoyed it at Manchester. I wish I could go there
again! |

Grangetown
Memories – Year 6 reminisce
Emily Cobb writes: I have many memories about the time I have spent
at Grangetown primary school. I came to Grangetown in nursery .Some
memories are funny but some are sad. Here is a selection of them.
Nursery: In nursery I can remember when we made little candle head
bands and we sang for our parents at Christmas! In nursery I had
Miss McBeth and Mrs.Lowes who were teaching me to write and read. I
felt really happy. Reception: Reception was when me and Courtney
Redpath became best friends and it’s when Miss.Greensit was teaching
me my sounds. It was really fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my
memories but I still don’t want to leave Grangetown primary school!
Plus me and Courtney are still best friends today! |

Year 6 have
sporty fun at Southmoor!
Yesterday all of year 6 went to Southmoor for a sports afternoon.
The school had two football teams, one netball team, one softball
team and one rounders team. I was on one of the football teams, our
first game was against Hill View, and sadly we lost 1-0. However our
second game was against Valley Road and we beat them 3-0 .I scored a
hat trick, we came second we were in the second place play offs. Our
first game in the mini play offs was one of five of Hill View’s
teams! At first they had an attack, Alex saved it. I kicked it up
the pitch and I shot the keeper put it went wide for a corner. The
keeper wasn’t on his line so I shot it hit the bar and went in. Then
I was one on one with the goalkeeper so I slotted it in the bottom
corner, we WON! In our last game we drew 0-0 with one of Valley
Road’s teams. By Keiron Reid Y6AM. |

Dear Producers…
Megan has written to the producers of X-Factor: Dear Producers,
Thank you for letting us come to the Manchester auditions to watch
our drama teacher, Mrs Davies (and the rest of her group), take part
in the X Factor. It was so interesting being behind–the–scenes! It
must be very stressful taking care of all the lights, sounds and
pictures in the background. You should be proud of yourselves! We
loved every second of our adventure! It was probably the most
exiting day of our lives! We are glad she got through because she
deserved it. I think the group would be saying “thank you” in their
heads right now! So, again Thank you for having us. It was the best
day ever. |

Guess
What!..more on the X-Factor!
Tamara Rea writes: When Mrs Davies and her group got on to the bus
we all cheered. I felt very happy. Then a minute later we were there
at ….X Factor. Then we had to line up for about 1 hour and 30
minutes. When we got behind the curtains we saw Dermot. Mrs Davies
and her group went on stage. They sang ‘Evacuate the dance floor’
Louis said “no” Nicole said “no” and Simon said “yes”. Simon had to
persuade Nicole to say yes! So they got into the Bootcamp. Me and
Neve were doing X Factor songs and people took lots of pictures. I
felt like I wanted to cry with joy. I was very happy. |

Get your
pizza for £1.00 – thanks Megan!
Megan won a competition recently, run by the Amore restaurant. Her
job was to design her very own pizza. She came first out of 600
entries, from 7 schools across Sunderland! Her pizza is called The
Megan Supreme – it has pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, and BBQ sauce!
Mmmmmm! This pizza is now on the menu at Amore, between 5-6. All
staff and children can get pizza for £1.00 during the Summer
holidays! Wow! Well done Megan – we’re proud of you! |

Looking back
on my time at Grangetown…
Emma writes: I have many memories about the time I have spent at
Grange Town School. I came to Grange Town in Yr 4-5. Some of my
memories are funny and some are sad. Here is a selection of some of
them. I liked it when we went to Eden Camp because we got to look at
the prisoners and how they always tried to escape. I also liked it
when we saw all the planes and the look-out person - the look out
person looked so real. I liked it when we went to the University of
Sunderland because the scientists did all the experiments and made
all the bangs. The bangs were as loud as thunder! I liked it when we
visited Southmoor, - me and the rest of the class learned a lot of
new things like how to use a computers properly and what it will be
like when we are in Year 7. |

Yr 1s
Undersea Adventure!
This term we went on a trip to the aquarium to learn about what it
is like under the sea. Mrs Dobson and Miss Hough went with us. First
we got to feel the starfish and they felt bumpy and rough. Next we
felt the crab and the shell felt hard. After that we went to look at
the colourful fish. We walked through a tunnel that was under the
water. My favourite part was when we went to the beach. Finally we
got the bus home. Back at school we wrote under the sea poems and
painted a picture. We had lots of fun. By Kaitlin Goodwin, Year 1. |

Summer Fayre
Success
Year 6 did a brilliant job organising our Summer Fayre. They set up
a number of ‘fun’ stalls, offering a variety of games and
activities. They also sorted through the toys, books etc and other
bits-n-bobs so kindly donated by parents. All of our children
attended the fayre, and enjoyed every minute of it. Our Southmoor
students even set-up their very own beauty parlour, offering special
nail varnishes! |
|
Sporty Fun!
Sports Day was a great success! Everyone was thoroughly exhausted
after a full afternoon of sporting fun! We were very fortunate to
have the young sports leaders down from Southmoor School helping out
with football, rounders, hockey and netball. We also had a huge
help for our Year 6 pupils who organised several different
activities, including penalty shoot out, penalty challenge,
assault-course, parachute, bowling, tennis, target throw to name but
a few. The children were very enthusiastic and joined in several
activities playing against children in different year groups. A
great afternoon had by all! By Mrs Miller. |

Stage Almost
Complete!
As you know, we are building an outdoor stage at the back of the
school. It’s coming on a treat! Nathan and his team from CEED are
doing a superb job, and the work is progressing swiftly. Next term,
we hope to hold a mini-concert to officially open the new stage. |

Grangetown’s
Got Talent!
All of the acts in Grangetown’s Got Talent were brilliant! The
children had worked hard to learn songs, routines and lines. We had
dancers, lots of singers and even a comedian. Well Done Everyone –
you all proved what a truly talented school we are! Roll on next
year! |

Our Helpers
from Southmoor
Our student visitors from Southmoor did a brilliant job at
Grangetown – they had a cheerful, up-beat attitude, worked hard and
were a great help. Here, they write about their experiences:
“For the last two weeks there have been pupils from Southmoor
Community School in year 10 doing their works experience. We were
all pupils at Grangetown 5 years ago and it was nice for all of us
to return to Grangetown as part of the staff. We have enjoyed most
aspects of the placement; from backing boards and laminating to
getting to know the children and helping them to learn.”
By all of the students.
‘This experience has been amazing - I will never forget it. I’ve
gained new skills which will help me with future jobs. These 2 weeks
have made me more mature and aware of the working environment and
have finalised my decision on wanting to be a teacher myself. I have
enjoyed every minute of being at Grangetown. Thank you very much.’
Kayleigh Appleton.
‘I have really enjoyed my week at works experience; I couldn’t have
picked a better place to go. It has been great working with the
children and staff and I have got along very well with them all.
They are all friendly and make you feel welcome. Thank you for
giving me this opportunity.”

goodbye and good luck to our caretaker Mr Foster, who retires after
