Little Dribblers!
Children in Foundation Stage and Daisy Chain have been learning new
football skills through a 10-week course - Little Dribblers. Each
week the children work with a coach from SAFC to develop physical
skills as well as learning to turn-take and build self-esteem. Our
children are 4 weeks into the course and are really enjoying it.
For the last session we will invite parents along to a presentation
event where you can see our footballers in action. Who knows we may
find the next Darren Bent! Ha’Way the Lads….and Lasses! By Miss
Booth. |

Derwent Hill
Adventure!
A couple of weeks ago, 36 children
from years 4,5 and 6 went on a residential visit to Derwent Hill. We
had a fantastic weekend packed full of activities and new
adventures. When we first arrived we sorted out our beds and
dormitories. We went for a night walk where we had to read maps and
walk around Lake Derwentwater. The scenery was fabulous, we even saw
baby lambs and sheep. The activities that the different groups took
part in included, rock climbing or a ropes course, gorge walking and
canoeing or kayaking. On the Saturday evening we got to do some more
map reading in the grounds. It was a really fun weekend where
everyone tried something different. By Lauren, year 6. |

Our Football Season
Grangetown have played 14
games this season. We won 5 games, drew 3 and lost 6. We scored 21
goals, conceded 20 and finished the League with 18 points. We
finished eighth out of 15 teams. The team’s season started off
badly, at Richard Avenue, where we got beaten 3-1 and drew 0-0. Then
we kept on drawing – 3 in a row. When we were drawing it made us
feel a bit disappointed, because we kept conceding goals. Our teams
top three scorers are: Layton Olsen, Kieron Reid and Owen Spoors. Mr
Newby has been training with us every Friday afternoon to help us
develop our football skills. By Jordan and Keiron. |

The Empire Here
We Come!
Every Friday afternoon, two
girls called Amy and Claire, from Sunderland University, come into
school to work with year 6. We have to warm up our muscles so that
we don’t pull or strain them. We do races, stretches and physical
challenges. Then we practiice our dance routines. At the end, we
cool down with more stretches and the Mexican Wave! We dance to pop,
street dance, and to relaxed music. We are looking forward to going
to the Empire Theatre on Thursday 24 June to perform our dance to
the song Pencil Full of Lead. There will be lots of other schools
there. This is a very special event – the Sunderland Dance Festival.
When we go to the Empire our classes have the chance to come and
watch us for the small price of just £3.00 a ticket. Our parents can
also come along, with their tickets costing £5.50. Sadly our dance
teachers are going on holiday when we do our performance so they
won’t be there to cheer us on. We have all enjoyed the dance this
term, and we can’t wait for the nest session after the half-term
holiday. By Emily and Sophie, Class 6AM. |

Daisychain
Children love the Dining Hall!
Recently the children
from our Daisychain daycare nursery started to have their lunch in
the dining hall, alongside our older children. Before that, they’d
eaten lunch in the Daisychain setting itself. They love being in the
dining hall, and have been grown-up and perfectly behaved. Well done
to our Daisychain children – your mums and dads will be proud of
you. |

SATs Memories!
On Monday the 10th
May year 6 finally completed their SATs in English and Maths. We
all felt nervous because we wanted to do our best. In English we
had to write about an imaginary animal called a ‘Mitpor’. I enjoyed
it because I could describe what it looked like and did. Maths was
hard, especially Paper A because I couldn’t get all the answers. I
tried my best doing all the sums. I feel much happier now they are
over. By Courtney Y6AM |

Grease Date Announced – Monday 5 July!
Every
Monday night and Tuesday morning the Grease cast from years 5 and 6
go to drama with Miss Davies to practice for Grease. It is going
great at drama, we have finished practising nearly all of the
scenes. Courtney (Y6) quoted “I really like drama and I am so
so happy I am Sandy. I think drama is definitely the thing for me!“
Beth (Y6) quoted “I like Marty because she is just like
me!!!!!! I like Jordan’s Character Patty Simcox because it’s just
like her!!!” Every one in drama likes it so far and they are really
enjoying it. They like the characters who they are playing and are
working hard to learn all of their lines. The choir is also working
hard to learn the songs so that they can take part in the musical
also. Grease the musical will take place on Monday 5th
July 2010 at 6.30pm in the hall of Grangetown Primary School.
Tickets will be on sale after half term from the school office. So
roll up, roll up before they all go!!! By Kelsey & Lauren
- yr 6 (Mrs Millican’s class). |

SATs Breakfast Club
To help us
get ready for SATs the Y6 children were invited to attend a
breakfast club run by the teaching assistants. Everyday we could
choose from toast, tea, juice, bacon and sausage sandwiches, cereal,
crumpets and croissants. The tea was just right and the toast was
not burnt. It was really relaxing chatting to my friends and
reading magazines. It helped me get ready for my SATs because
instead of having an empty stomach, you could eat whatever you
wanted and it made you feel more confident and not hungry. I wish
it were on everyday. By Callum, Y6AM.

Bedesworld Adventure!
Year three visited Bede’s World as part of our Viking topic; we
wanted to find out how the monks lived before the Vikings attacked
them. When we arrived we met our guide, she showed us a model of how
the monastery looked in Bede’s time, which was over 1300 years ago.
We talked about the life of monks and the work they did. Then we
looked around the museum and drew pictures of monks working. We left
the museum and walked over to a very old church built around the
time of 685 AD, called St Paul’s. Inside the church our guide gave
us monks’ habits to put on, which had cowls to cover our heads. The
monk’s habits were very warm and itchy! We had to walk slowly up the
aisle and sit on the altar steps. Then our guide showed us the
oldest stained glass in Europe which is very beautiful! By Mrs
Bewick’s class. |

Year 4
Footballers
Y4 enjoyed playing in a football tournament at Southmoor Community
School, against other schools in our cluster. They barely had a
minute break, playing 5 matches one after the other. They showed
true stamina and sportsmanship. By Miss Miller. |

World Cup Fever!
It’s just over a week until the start of the World Cup, and
excitement in school is building! Every class at Grangetown will be
adopting a World Cup nation, and learning lots about the culture of
that country. Our children will learn about food, customs, dance,
school, traditions, stories, daily life, toys & games...and much
more. There will be lots of enriching learning opportunities,
covering writing, speaking & listening, role play and drama, maths,
geography, history, languages, PSHE, PE and art....and more! And,
of course, our children will gain an insight into a range of other
cultures, developing an understanding of just what a diverse and
wonderful world we live in - and realising as well that our
international neighbours have much in common with us here in
Sunderland. We will build-in opportunities for some of our pupils to
meet visitors from the nation they are studying. On match days, our
big screen in the hall - complete with free-view - will be available
to transport us into the heart of the action in Cape Town,
Johannesburg, Durban and all of the other world cup venues. Wow! We
are very excited about this project and can't wait for the 'big
kick-off'! |

Skipping in Year 4
Years 3 and 4 loved their recent skipping sessions. A special
skipping coach came into school to teach the children some different
ways of skipping and to promote keeping fit. The children had great
fun. |

Year 4 Allotment
Year 4 have been working with Nathan, from CEED, (Community
Environmental Educational Developments) on a project designed to
improve our school grounds. This week they visited the CEED
allotments – Nathan said that after half-term year 4 can set up
their very own allotment so that they can plant some fruit and
vegetables. Year 4 can’t wait! |

Pupils Interview New Teachers!
A group of 12 Grangetown pupils, including several members of our
school council, recently worked with Mrs Napier and Mrs Dawson to
interview teachers who had applied to work at Grangetown. In two
groups of 6, they devised their own questions and were extremely
mature and sensible in the way they conducted the interviews. Their
views have been valuable in helping us to make the right decisions
in deciding who to appoint. Well done! |

|
Cooking Club Party!
The children in our Cookery Club recently went along to Farrington
Community Sports College for a Let’s Get Cooking get together with
other schools. The idea was to share experiences, swap ideas,
exchange recipes, do some cooking…and have a party! The children
tasted new foods, and enjoyed quizzes and games (all about food, of
course!). They won prizes for their performance in the quiz, and for
their excellent behaviour. Everyone had a great time. |
