History is about finding out about the past using a range of
sources, and learning how the past is different from the
present.
The children develop skills like the ability to weigh up
evidence and reach conclusions. As a result they begin to
understand and remember events and people from the past, and the
historical order in which events happened.
They learn about:
~ Significant events, such as the Olympic Games, the Great Fire
of London etc.
~ Differences between past and present, such as Victorian
seaside holidays compared to modern seaside holidays.
~ The Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in Britain. Victorian
Britain. The Ancient Egyptians and Greeks.
Where possible, we aim to use the local area as a way of making
history meaningful and more relevant.
The photographs on the left celebrate and evoke aspects of
Sunderland's past.
The 1st photograph shows Raich Carter, iconic
hero from the glory days of Sunderland Football Club. He was born in Hendon in 1913,
just next door to Grangetown. He captained Sunderland to the League title in 1936, and followed
that up with victory in the FA Cup final a year later, scoring
the second Sunderland goal in a 3-1 win over Preston North End.

her mobile fish van in Grangetown. The image was taken at the
beginning of last century.
The last photograph is an evening scene in Fawcett Street, 1959.
